Career Discovery Series: Generating Intelligence - How Gen AI will Affect Your Future Jobs

As the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to dominate headlines, many are left wondering: Will AI take over my job? The reality is that AI is unlikely to replace people, however, people who leverage AI might replace those who don't. Embracing this technology and adapting to it will unlock new opportunities and ensure you stay ahead in the changing job landscape.

In fact, according to SG Tech's Gen AI for the Workforce report, AI is a major part of the technological evolution shaping the future of the way we work and live. In particular, the buzzword for this year is Generative AI (Gen AI), the branch of AI involved in the creation of new output.

Read on to find out more about what Gen AI is all about.

1. What is Gen AI?

Unlike regular AI, which is often used for data organisation to classify or detect, Gen AI is a subset of AI that can generate new output from given prompts and data that the programme has been trained on.

A popular example is ChatGPT, where users can receive new and unstructured content from the inputs based on user-generated prompts and existing content that the programmer has trained the system on.

2. What are its functions?

The functions of Gen AI can be broken down to three main areas:

 Automation

Creation

Advisory

Function

Automate and streamline existing business processes.

Creates new content based on machine learning.

Suggests potential outputs based on user prompts and learned patterns.

Level of Human intervention

Low: Needs to be subjected to occasional checks and reviews to ensure smooth operations.

Mid: Intervention is required for quality control, iteration, and sound deployment.

High: Intervention required, especially to make final reviews and decisions.

Example of Use

Automates A/B testing for marketing assets and optimises digital sales channels and funnels.

ChatBots trained with existing FAQs, tutorials, user guides, and previous user support experiences that assist people.

Generates potential product designs using predictive models, user input and feedback.

3. How does it affect my job?

With the use of Gen AI-driven tech in the workplace, organisations and enterprises have a responsibility to ensure ethical practices are in place. Cybersecurity measures also need to be boosted, especially with the increasingly large amount of data involved. Organisations and enterprises also need to identify and support job re-design and training needs to align these with their adopted Gen AI solutions.

For general users like you and me, the rise of Gen AI triggers the growing need for effective and responsible use. This includes the need to engage in context and creative thinking, data verification, and greater data literacy. These skills are important to discern and validate AI output to maintain accuracy.

4. Where can I start?

In-demand skills for Gen AI roles vary depending on your specific position.

As a General User, skills that combine domain-specific knowledge with Gen AI processes are useful. This includes:

  • Website Design
  • Social Media Marketing
  • Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)
  • Critical Thinking
  • Problem Solving
  • GenAI Ethics

As a person in Gen AI Development and Solutions (Software Engineer, Full Stack Developer, AI / ML Engineer), the following can be useful:

  • Programming and Coding
  • Application Development
  • Cloud Computing
  • Big Data-related skills (e.g. Analytics, Governance, Engineering, Ethics, Design)
  • AI Ethics and Governance
  • Management and development of Large Language Models (LLM)

5. How can I use Gen AI responsibly?

With great power comes great responsibility. With the rapidly-evolving Gen AI processes, how can we use our skills responsibly?

  1. Understand the source of the data used for generating output – was the dataset biased in the first place?
  2. Always verify and fact check generated content, particularly for sensitive or critical topics.
  3. Consider the context where the output would be used, especially with data and copyright privacy.
